When former president Trump addressed the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) on Wednesday, he created so many head-turning moments that it was almost impossible to select the worst. Was it when he referred to the journalists’ questions as “stupid and racist”? Or criticized his introduction as “very rude”? Or when he claimed that Vice President Harris was Indian, then “turned Black”?
As bad as all these were, it could have been worse. According to one source, he almost came on-stage in blackface.
“It took them a while to get some technical issue cleared up, and he sat there, fuming and fuming. At one point – and you could almost see the light bulb go off in his head – he turned to the person touching up his orange pancake makeup and says, ‘Can you make it darker?’”
According to the source, Trump was attempting to thread the needle with his NABJ interview: appeal to his base, and also strengthen his support with Black Americans. The first he had covered with his typical confrontational demeanor. The second, he figured he could cover by looking more like his audience.
“’I can pass! I can pass!’ he kept screaming,” the source said. “Luckily, they fixed the problem and called him out on stage before the make-up person could whip him up some type of a burnt umber tint.
“Lord help us, I don’t know what we’re going to do next week when he addresses the Muskogee Christian Nudists Association,” said the source.
